DIYSportsCar.com - Build diary
This diary is updated with newest entries at the top.
2004-05-10 - Not much chassis work but a couple of other things:
- Thanks to Alan Bertwistle (see his Meerkat on my Links page)
for pointing out that my page looked like crap to Internet
Explorer. Probably as a result of me originally creating the page
in Word and then later editing it in Mozilla Composer, the HTML code
was absolutely evil! I've redone this page entirely just using
Mozilla. Death to Microsoft and their stupid antics :(
- I've added the Social Activities page here.
Don't underestimate the importance of support networks of friends and
other like-minded individuals.
2004-05-04 - Progress on two fronts:
- Finalising the design of the engine bay portion of the
chassis. Up until now this has appeared on drawings as a vague
sketch marked "Here Be Dragons" :) Since that doesn?t help much
when I'm trying to build it
I dragged the drive train out, fitted the half shafts, hubs and struts
and took some measurements. I made a pair of simple boards to
support the hubs at the same height as the wheels. I could have
used the wheels but the boards make for better access. Here's a
shot showing the overall layout of the drivetrain. I may put a
final chassis drawing up here or I might just weld the thing together
and show the finished product.

- Did some more cutting and welding. Because my cutoff saw
is pretty loud, I've tried to do as much cutting as possible on
weekends during the day. Then, I can do the welding at night
during the week. Here's a
collection of pre-cut tubes and the welded up result. The seat
back horizontals are all in and the front suspension box is done.

2004-04-19 - Now that the welder is setup I can start confidently
tacking and welding some of the tubes that have been cut and sitting on
the build board since January. Here's a shot with some unknown fat man
sitting in the beginnings of a frame. Everyone sits in the middle of it
all making vroom-vroom noises don't they?

2004-04-16 - Another builder came around and gave me some guidance with
the setup of my MIG welder. Every welding guide I?ve ever read says
that having someone who knows what they're doing check your settings is
invaluable. They're right! In about 20 minutes, we went from horrible
welds with virtually no penetration to welds that look and feel great
and, when cut open, are revealed to be spot on. Thanks very much John.
Before April 2004 - Lots of time spent gathering parts and materials.
